1972 5 speed
I have a 1972 L600 Ford truck with a 5 speed trans and a 2 speed rear. 390 engine. Fifth gear is NOT overdrive-it is direct drive 1:1. Can it be retrofitted to a 351m-400 4x4? Not in a hurry nor do I have my heart set on the swap. Just curious......and yes I realize there is a flywheel housing bolt pattern difference. I have just never dealt with the older five speeds. Thanks.

Probably the easiest way to adapt a transfer case to it would be to use a divorced case and have a shaft made at a 4wd shop to the the output of the tranny and the input of the transfer case with a slip joint in the middle.
Might try looking to see if the NP435 housing would work or not. I've driven a f600 around at my dad's work with the same transmission and it definitely doesn't shift like a car, I had the crazy idea of wanting it in my truck too.
