Distributor gear material?

I just got my 400 rebuilt with comp cams retro fit hydrulic roller cam. Comp recommends a Steel/iron melonized gear for the distributor. I'm wondering what others are running with this same cam setup. The only gear i can find is an MSD #85812 which says its Iron, with a melonite QPC coating. Is this the gear I need. Comp doesn't make one.

I think Crane went out of business. I'd use the Comp Cams gear. The wrong gear will wreck your cam.

Yeah, Crane went out of business but the motorcycle-specific stuff was purchased by
S & S Cycle and apparently a deal to sell the automotive portion to Triton Valvetrain fell
through, leaving S & S Cycle with it.

You can still surf to Crane Cams | Automotive Home Page

Crane is not out of business, I just picked up their 2011 cam catalog from the PRI show in December. If you don't wish to use the Crane piece, Mallory part # 29420 .....This is what I use in a Cleveland when doing a Hyd. Roller (Steel Billet core) I get it from summit racing.

hollenjoe, that's good to know. I'm going to contact Comp Cams and find out if you can get that done or if it's a special thing, I'll get a cost for doing it to. John

Another possibility that we normally use is a new gear by Lunati.
It is their "Everwear" gear.
I do not know how it compares to the Crane part number.

Thanks tim i will look in to that. The cam is a comp # 32-421-8 it is the hydralic retro fit cam. That Comp said is made of an austempered ductal iron. not a true billet steel cam. so that is why I was wondering what to use beside brass.

piperig78, I contacted Lunati Cams. The part number for the everwear distributor gear is 89100 for a .530 dia. gear
