I´ve got a 2001 Ranger B2500 TD 4x4 (Southern Africa Model). One of its front axle joint boot (nearest to the wheel) have been damaged. Is there anyone may advice me how to solve the problem? Replace the boot? How? It seems I have noticed the grease leakage early and so no problems to the joint itself! Note I do not know the type of the joint! Thanks in advance!
Hi Moises, and welcome to Ford Truck Enthusiasts!!!
A South African Ranger, that's pretty cool. Does it have four doors and a large rear seat area, like some of the pictures I've seen?
Anyway, I'm not a mechanic, but I think that if it's just the boot that is damaged, then you can probably buy a kit and replace the boot. However, if the CV joint itself is damaged, then you're gonna have to replace the entire axle assembly.
You should wait for some other opinions, though. Like I said, I'm not an expert.
Thanks Rockledge and all of you have read my question. Yes the South Africa Ranger has 4 doors and a, comparatively to its "brothers", comfortble rear space. Hope what you have seen be the SA Ranger. I still waiting for other opinions. Thanks a lot.
From my limited experience with CV joints (in my 86 4wd VW van), you're probably still okay with the joint. If the boot has ripped, and the cv joint isn't making any clunking or clicking noises when making sharp turns or anything, you should be able to clean out the joint, repack it with grease, and put on a new boot. Do the SA Rangers have hubs that disengage the front axle or is it similar to the live axle setup in the US, where the front components turn all the time? Reguardless, you should take care of the problem asap. There should be companies that sell replacement boot kits, maybe even Ford. Hopefully someone else will have more helpful comments. Maybe in the meantime you can take some pics of the truck, and tell us how you like the TD engine, that we're all wishing for...
