Clutch Adjustment
1988 F250 Diesel 4x4 with 5 speed manual with hydraulic clutch.
Here's the problem -
Its impossible to get into reverse while the engine is running and 1st is getting harder and harder. 2nd thru 5th are normal. The clutch shouldn't be worn yet (40,000 miles) and if I start it in gear with the clutch pushed in, it wants to creep forward just a little bit. There is no slipping in gear. All this leads me to believe that the clutch isn't worn, it just isn't disengaging enough. What's the best way to adjust it? I looked at the slave cylinder and no adjustments were imediately apparent.
I'm gonna get a chilton book today, but any advice would be appreciated. I'm pretty new to Fords, diesels and manual transmissions. I spend most of my time on the race car that the truck pulls.
Thanks,
SB
Here is a litle some thing to look for, there should be a small plastic clip that hold the clutch pedal rod under the dash, some times it's the rod that is either bent or not aligned, had the same problem on my 97 was a cheap fix at $1.28, I also found that it was hard to shift and the pedal had to be on the floor, also any pedal lift would engage the gear.
Hope this helps.

That makes a lot of sense because the pedal does feel different and the steering column is moving more than it used to when I push in the clutch. I thought it was just my imagination, but if the rod isn't going straight than things are gonna feel weird.
Did you get the clip from the dealer?
Thanks,
Sometimes there is need to add some fluid to the reservoir. Be careful to remove the insert in there first, add the fluid then replace the insert. Also, On 2 separate occasions, the firewall was flexing just enough to mess up the movement of the clutch pedal.
Just something else to look at, because I dont think a hydraulic clutch has any adjustment to it.
Good luck, keep us updated.
There's a housing that holds the steering column and clutch pedal. The housing is split completly in 2 peices. THis is allowing the whole assembly to move instead of pushing the clutch rod.
Anyone ever had to replace this housing?
