I haven't changed the oil yet (3800 miles now) I frequently here the engine change it's pitch.
Sometimes nice and quite sometimes like an older model.
Don't know if it is possible but almost sounds like the pilot injection is turning on and off.
It does the same thing on mine too. Like you said, sometimes it seems almost as if the pilot injection is turned off. In a couple of cases, a DPF regen started within a minute of the increased engine noise. Seems like it changes from 4-5 injections per cycle to 2 per cycle. There's no way that is accidental. I'm sure this is just part of the software strategy. For some reason the injection strategy changes right before the regen begins.

I don't know about the regen noise. But I agree with the pilot injection turning on and off to. You can tell the change when going from a coast around 15 MPH, and then get in the throttle very easily. It goes from quiet, to hearing the injectors pinging off. Sometimes the engine is quiet, and then sometimes it sounds like an old 6.0
Yepr. A little bit louder after the first transfusion. Dealer warned me it would be because of the additive FOMOCO puts in em before they leave the mothership. I pay almost $4 agallon to hear that rattle. I like it!
I did find reference on several sites in regards to friction modifiers that are put in the break in oil, but the only one that I could find in a search is the XL-3 not the XL-17 - is there more than one?
My dually has started to do the same thing. Runs tight and quite, then changes to a 6.0L. More 6.0L than tight and quite lately - and thats the part that I don't like. Why start changing after a couple thousand miles?? Also seems to lose throttle response when it running like s**t as well. I really don't think that its normal.
Should run the same all the time, this isn't 1973 here.
I was at 5k on first oil change now at 26+ and still same level of noise since first oil change - using Rotella-T 15W-40
Since you are using the 15w40, I would think there wouldn't be much difference in noise. The Rotella being a little thicker oil, I mean. I plan on waiting a while before switching to the Rotella, tho. As long as I can find the 10w30 that is.
I also noticed the engine in my truck getting louder, I did the first oil change yesterday. As soon as I started it up with the new oil and filter, quiet as new. Used mobil1 5w-40.
Hmm, didn't know moby made a diesel class oil. Might have to look into that. I use Mobil 1 in the wife's caddy.
The oil viscosity should have no effect on combustion related noise as the 6.7 does not use the oil in the injection system. It uses low pressure bleed fuel for the hydraulic portion of the injector.
Mines only at 2500 mi. but I might change the oil to see if it will talk a little more, I miss the personality.
I remember my 6.0 was the same way. Quietest I ever heard when I bought it, almost the same as my 7.3s when I sold it at 45,000 miles. My 6.7L engine does seem a bit louder then when I bought it (at 7500 miles) and I pretty much figured it will get louder as it gets older.

Mobil just started to make the oil, this is what I was told anyway by the supplier. It was only avalable in quarts when I bought it, $32 for a six pack. I will be getting a drum as soon as they are avalible. It does have the CJ-4 rating.
