My daughter has a 99 Saturn. While she was in work yesterday the horn started blowing by itself. Somebody pulled the fuse for her but as soon as it goes back in the horn starts again. Does pushing on the steering wheel to activate the horn, provide a ground or the power for it? What can cause it to go off by itself?
Thanks for any help.
the horn button should provide ground for the horn relay.
try to remove the horn pad in the center of the wheel and see if it still blows. i have seen the switches in the horn pad short out.
Agreed, over time the horn pads can be compressed enough to close the switch on their own. If pulling the horn pad shuts off the horn, replace the horn pad. You should be able to find that pretty easily in the junkyard.
Thanks guys. I am going to take it apart over the weekend. But in the mean time the service engine light went on so I checked the codes and got a PO341. It is not in the book. Ever hear of it?
OK Bob, from what i can find, the GM P0341 code is a cam position sensor code, but your Saturn does not have a CPS.
it gets it cam signal from #4 cylinder, and a misfire on #4 will give you that code sometimes.
also, the ignition module under the coil pack sometimes get corroded terminals and will set of the 341 code.
from what i can see, cleaning the connectors on the ignition module and a tune up usually solves the problem.
Well you are up and about early Tom.
I solved the SES light problem. I changed the plugs. It looked like they needed it. Then I canceled the code and it stayed off. I drove it early this morning again to make sure it was staying off. I checked the horn at the wheel, but it seemed ok. I am thinking the problem is the horn itself if that is possible. When I put the fuse in I can hear it click then start to blow. Since I can't get anything from Saturn I will just get something generic from Pep Boys and try that. I can always run a new horn button to the dash if I have to. The car has 170k on it and we will just run it until it dies. I won't have a chance to get to it again until next weekend. Thanks for the tips.
the horn relay may be shorted out/sticking also.
since you don't need a horn for inspection any more, why not just give her one of those little hand held air horns??
Well I spoke too soon. The light came back on while she was coming home from work. I will have to check the connections and maybe check the plug wires. What kind of ohms should they have?? Any idea?
I will tell her about the air horn. Maybe I"ll just buy one and give it to her for fun.
Update. I changed the plug wires and cleaned the plug under the coil. I canceled the light and it stayed off for a bit. In the meantime the starter went bad so I replaced that and the battery. Now the light is back on and I have 3 codes. The PO341 is back and I have 2 PO410 codes. The second one seems to have a PD after it. The 410 says "Secondary air injection system malfunction." It is not in the Saturn book. Does anybody have a clue what that is?
