Okay so the other day i checked maybe 4 days ago i checked my oil and topped it off about a half a quart low and ran great. by the way it is a 1998 ford expedition 5.4 4x4 and today i checked it due to the rattling i posted a few days ago and its so low it isn't even measure on the dipstick i will be putting it on the lift tommarow or Thursday but was wondering if you have anything i should check i dont think it messed up any internals yet because i am pretty sure that is my belt tensioner causing the rattle.
Is the oil filter located behind the bumper? If so, check all the lines. Also, the 5.4l was known to leak oil from the headgasket. They leaked out of the rear of the gasket near the firewall. Can't remember right or left. If you are loosing that much oil, it will be easy to see when you get it in the air. There will be some fresh oil dripping. If you were burning it there would be some upset drivers behind you because they wouldn't be able to see. Also, don't forget about the drain plug. Even a little loose can't leak a good amount out. Any puddles underneath your truck after driving it. Good luck.
The headgasket issue is on the p/s and you can drain the entire pan without seeing a drop on the ground or smoke, I had it happen to me. It leaks onto the exhaust manifold and burns away.
