Hello, I just bought a flowmaster 40series muffler, i plan on installing it myself. My question do i keep both cats or remove any of them or dont bother touching them? Im just putting the muffler in thats it. Its a 95 eddie bauer and dont need to pass emissions for inspection.
If they are working, the answer is... you MUST keep them by Federal Law. If they have clogged or failed in some way AND you are not subject to emissions inspections, you have the options to gut them and run that way, replace them with modern units that require no air injection, or remove them and run the exhaust straight on through to whatever muffler suits your auditory pleasure.
Ive found the flex pipe is good for quick fixes. tends to burn out fast and create leaks. I have to use it off of my headers to miss the tranny cross over and have to replace it about every 2 years
Ok ive got the new muffler installed with an extended about 14" pipe. Im wondering if this is normal but it started to smell kinda like burning on the inside of the truck once it got warmed up, it did have a few stickers on it is this normal will it go away after a few days of driving it around? Its not touching anything i took a look underneath when i got home and everything looked good. Had to drive home with the window down though. Oh and by the way my bronco sounds like a real truck now
Did you check that there weren't any leaks? i had a leak in my exhaust once that hitted near the tranny's tunnel and it actually started a fire in my carpet (not so much as flames and all, but it did burn a big patch of the carpet).
When I put my new muffler on it smelled for a few days, as long as it is not hitting or burning anything I would run it for a few and see if it goes away.
i poked around else where and people said that new mufflers have a thin layer of oil on them to prevent rusting, so im guessing that this is whats burning. The welding we did was pretty good. I do have this muffler sealer stuff that im gonna put on where we used the muffler clamps just in case.
