I'm brand new to this forum and I wish I'd found it a long time ago - it looks to be very informative. I can't get the steering column in my '74 Bronco to provide ground consistently. I've searched and found that my "rag joint" needs a ground strap, which I've improvised but still not getting 100% ground from the shaft at the wheel. I'm gonna go back now and jump the u-joint as well.
My question: How did the ground flow up the shaft from the factory? and why am I having to jump through hoops to get ground to my steering wheel so my horn will work?
Not much corrosion in this one. It came out of Nebraska and had appently been kept out of the salt. Where is the "telesope joint"? Is it something I can clean up and restore ground to my shaft?
It would be inside the column tube, where the shaft is made to collapse in a collision to keep the wheel from punching you in the face. I just don't know if your truck was built that way. Old ones had a solid shaft from the rag joint to the steering wheel. You might be able to add a copper wiper to the column tube sticking inward & rubbing on the shaft to ground it.
