Very cool... much easier than loading or navigating the iPod.
Do you know if there is a way to list albums that on the iPod/USB drive through Sync commands?
Man... I have almost 2 TB of music on a Western Digital MyBook drive... I'm thinking I could plug the drive into the onboard A/C outlet and into the USB...
I wouldn't, unless you have that drive backed up to another drive. Portable harddrives are NOT made to take the bouncing that a truck will put on it. It also may have a hard time (and a long wait) trying to access all the songs. I suspect that it wouldn't be finding your music very fast.
I have just over 1.2 TB of music and found that it takes a while to access music from my Ipod because of the vast number of songs in each catagory.
Maybe the new system will be faster than my old one. I've yet to get delievery on my new 2011 so time will tell
I have a 16gb flash drive hooked into mine, nothing special...

I put a power plug in that has 2 USB ports on in it, that will at least allow me to charge a USB device.
The '11 SD's have the second USB port behind the glovebox on the right hand side. See here for details:
Its a little tricky getting the radio to reconize the USB stick for the first time but it is explained in the SYNC owners manual on page 50. I created a folder in my computer called "Music on a Stick" to put all the music I want in there. Then plug it in to the USB port. For some reason my USB plugs in upside down. Press the AUX button till the radio displays SYNC. Press MENU untill Media Menu appears then scroll until the SELECT SRC appears. Press OK. Scroll until SYNC USB appears and press OK. It should show USB CHOSEN. Its a little tricky the first couple of time but I made a copy of that page as a cheat sheet and keep it in my visor. The song playing appears on the radio display, you can change track with the select button and whats really cool is you can push the VOICE button and tell SYNC what TRACK or ARTIST you want to listen too.

Well hell Rick, now i'm going to have to try this out. I think that would be very cool. I'll let you know how it turns out. thanks for the info.
I didn't read anything (except what you guys posted) on how to do it... and went for it. Pretty friggin' sweet. My iTunes loads my iPod on another computer, so that all takes time. This whole USB drive thing... copy the music folders to the stick, pop it into the truck, tell Sync to use USB, listen to the Sync lady give me the safety dissertation, and it was up and running... exactly like it does with my iPod.
Can't wait to take the glovebox apart tonight to find the extra USB port...
+1 on the upside down USB port...weird. I need to take the dash off again (have had it off once already for the lockpick install) and see if I can just flip it around.
Another neat thing with the flash drives/memory sticks, is that you can scroll past the artist/album/genre selection to Folder List.
I have have my flash drive arranged in a manner that's easier for me to navigate than going through the artist (i.e. Tom Petty listed as Tom Petty, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, or Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers). All my mis-named junk is under one folder on the usb drive, but when Sync gets ahold of it, it's broken up separately. You can scroll down in the artist/album/genre to Folder List and it'll list the folders you have on the flash drive.
I need to run some extra USB cords off the 2nd port just so I have some charging stations for myself and the kids!!
ok, so i loaded up a 2 GB memory stick and went out to my pickup. pluged it in and pushed the voice button on the steering wheel. lady asked me what i wanted and i told her "usb" and she started playing my music.
very cool!
now the only problem is navigating through the memory stick to all my songs.
hard to get from Bon Jovi, to Nickleback, then back to Carrie Underwood.
Also, i took out my glovebox and couldn't find that pesky second usb port. will try again.
I like the charging station idea... wonder if a USB hub would come in handy...
If you just need charging ports, then just buy a power adapter that has a USB port on it and add a USB hub. That's what I did, have 5 Ipods that need to be charged when on long trips, works great. Just make sure you get a hub that is powered.
Found the second port. Now just need to get the cabling. This article led me to it... The ports are facing away from the opening in the SD. The last pic was the clue. Kinda small, but it should give you a good hint of what to look for.
