For the price you can't beat AE and what it does. A must IMO when troubleshooting.
Another choice would be a scangauge.

Even though it hasn't help me actually fix my truck it has certainly helped me along the way. Now when my truck dosent start or is acting up first thing I go for is my ae. I'd be at a shops mercy without it. Probly so far the best investment I've made with clay so far!!

Not that you need another vote for AE, but it is really the best deal for the money. You can go out and find a used Snap-On MT2500 or similar device, but lately they have been fetching a fair amount of cash on ebay.

I like my diablosport.. might not do as much as the AE, but for the money it a great programmer/scanner. see:
