I am probably opening a can of worms here, but.....
I currently have a '99 F250 Super duty Crew Cab 4X4 Long Bed with a V10. I am looking to buy my frist Diesel. I would also like to get a manual transmission. I love my Ford, but I am leaning toward getting a Cummins. Please tell me why you like your Ford Diesels. And please teel me which one you have 7.3, 6.0, or 6.4. I'm not trying to start an argument, just make an informed decision. Thank you. I will probably be keeping it mostly stock, and will be towing a 28' travel trailer.
We do have parallel topic already going.
Fords are generally stronger build, but the 7.3 engine ending in 2003 was the last good engine in them and the 6-speed manual the only reliable transmission. Guess what I am driving?
I have owned 2 dodge cummins a 91 12v 5spd and a 2001 HO 6spd and I never had to touch the engines other than maintenance, I would still have the 01 if it was a true crew cab (kids). Stay away from dodge auto transmissions. If my V10 ever craps out I plan on doing a cummins swap into my ford then I will finally have my dream truck!!!
Thanks guys, sorry about the parrallel thread. I have hear the same thaing about the 7.3 compared to the rest. Thought about swapping out the V10 for the 5.9, and probably would if my truck was a manual. I know Dodge autos are not well thought of (crap), but you are right about the size of the Dodge back seat. TOO MANY CHOICES, UGH!!!!!
Dodge hand shakers have their problems too. If I was in your shoes I'd trade in what you have on a LEASE of a new Ford 6.7 diesel. The value of your used truck could make the entire 2 year payment of the lease up front. After 2 years if you like the truck, you buy it. If you don't like the truck then just turn it in. I've done this many time with Ford.
I have the 7.3 in my X and just love it! I'll be keeping it forever!
My Dad is in the situation of needing new work trucks and is debating getting a dodge. I keep telling him like a broken record that we should find a couple 7.3's from down south with low miles and have it over with but he wants newer trucks. I also told him we could do the cummins swap into a ford as well. Like you said, to many options and none of them seem to be 100% the way to go.
