Any reason not to have yours rebuilt by a local quality rebuilder?
Who makes that alternator, Mitsubishi? Lester #12075? Got a photo?
Depending on how much current you use at one time. If you are not depending on the alternator to do a LOT of battery re-charging, or running a kilowatt sound system and lights, a smaller, non-ambulance alternator probably will do the job just fine.
If I were you, I'd sure hang onto that Mitsu, with the idea of finding out what's wrong with it and either fixing it, or having it fixed, depending....
For sure, don't give it up as a core! If you're thinking of doing THAT, heck, I'LL buy it from you!
I bought a 200A large case alternator from Eagle Auto Electric a few months back and have had no problems with it at all. No core charge either. Found them on ebay.
HERE is one now. Just be sure you can fit the large cased unit, i.e. have enough space. I had to use washers on mine to raise it up a bit; better would be to grind the bracket below it to get the extra room.
Pop,
to keep the core will cost me $75 since I am getting a 130 amp replacement. The core for my mitsu 215 is $250!
How much could I get for it?
How much to rebuild?
The Quigley is like a small motorhome guys. The reason it has such a high amp alternator is for running the frig, auxilary heater and other 12 volt accessories and to be able to charge more then just the 2 start batteries. I'm sure there is a third battery that is isolated from the starting system to run accessories when engine is not running.
To the OP, a 130 amp alt may let you down at some time. There is a reason that Quigley upgraded to a 215 amp alt.
Of course if you don't have a lot of accessories or don't use them let your wallet deterine what to do.

At that rate, give them your Mitsu core and get the new alternator and some money besides.
At $75 for a 6G core, you're dealing with horse traders, 'cause it shouldn't be that much anywhere ('cept horse traders).
Thanks again for the replies.
I went with a 130 amp as I have no accessories. No fridges or anything like that.
Turns out that my alternator was not the mitsu 215 that they were going to replace it with, but it looks like a small motorcraft 130. There are no identifying marks on it??? Just has a stamp motorcraft and another 21.
It looks exactly like the 130 anyway. Certainly not the $1000.00 mitsu.
So now I have to go back and get my $75 for the core exchange.
I'm learning...
The "small Motorcraft" is the standard, small-frame 6G, 110-amp (Lester #8306). It's the one that almost all of these trucks came with.
The large-frame one is rated at 135-amps, and is Lester #8307.
These numbers are for the alternators "clocked" for use in the top position of F-Series trucks, and not necessarily "clocked" for vans. The clocking refers to what relative position the connectors are in on the rear case. Clocking can be changed in these by removing the case bolts and rotating the field windings and rear case if necessary, but then it becomes a different Lester number.
Hey Marv, Thanks for the input & links. It might be more than he wants to know but he's not the only reader. Am I correct in thinking I have a Lester 8306 in my truck?
Thanks Marv I got it, but that brings to mind another question that maybe others have too. How do I tell if my local re builder is the one I want to use? I want quality American made components. What else would you look for when talking to 'the guy'. Thanks
