I was short on cash, so I went with these. I know a lot of guys will say no! no! no!, but I have about 7500 miles so far, and all is well. Just my .02 Jim

Have you checked the brake pad springs? I have two on each wheel that are basically a bent peice of spring wire that is inserted inthe back edge of the pads, one top and one bottom. Helps spread the pads apart when not in use. Could be a sound from slightly dragging pads.

I replaced the springs when I replaced the brakes, new clips, springs, boots, slide pins, calipers, pads and rotors... But I was thinking something like this because the noise seems to get quieter, idk about going away all together, if I get on the brakes and then it comes back when I let off?

They stopped putting ABS on our trucks after the early 99 xlt's ?? My early XLT 99 has ABS..
Maybe it is your driveline center support bearing..

I'm sure the ABS was just an option..... I have it on the rear only.
I thought this might be the cause and checked it for play, I didn't notice any real play in it. I suppose it could just be worn out and still not have play?

Did the e-brake assemblies look ok when you pulled the rear rotors?

I didn't notice anything, but I haven't really done anything with them before so idk. The pass. side cable's sheath is frayed a little but it functions ok and you can't see the cable inside the sheathing...You have to push the e-brake pretty far down to have it hold but I figured it just needed tightening at somepoint. The rear pads and rotors look good.
Also, I took the truck for a drive today and didn't notice anything by swerving back and forth as was suggested, but I did notice that during sweeping right turns done at 40 plus there is a vibration that develops....

Kwik, I'll be hard pressed to find a road around here to do this but it's nice outside so I guess i'll go for a long drive today, thanks for the help. I'm not sure the noise is coming from the front though...sounds like it is from behind the front seat....?
I wish I had an ABS hole to grease through, darn 99.5 xlt's...I have been slowly putting parts on the truck since I got it and the wife is getting a bit fed up on our budget so I may just be living with it for a little while if I do have to do the bearings...
Behind the front seat, eh?
Do you have a pair of jack stands so you can lift the truck off the ground and roll around under the truck while the truck is in gear while you listen for the source of the noise?
If not they are a very inexpensive, valuble investment. Probably could buy 4 for the price of one dealer diagnostic visit.

Center support bearing will definitely wear out before you feel play in it. That would be guess??

I do have two 4ton jack stands, the thing is the noise doesnt get loud until around 10 mph and it scares me to put the rear end up and have something leaning on the skinny pedal....

I thought it was the center support bearing but I have been thinking in circles for a while now moving from one thing to another... If I were to replace the center support bearing, is there a how-to. I was thinking it might be pressed on which I would have a hard time doing with the tools I have. Any one have some info? Also, would the act of getting on the brakes make the noise get significantly quieter if it was the center support bearing? I guess the squat would change the drive angle slightly?

Steve, Do a search on Oreilly's or Rock Auto (or one of our locals here) and you can see the center support bearing. On my '99 the rear driveshaft plugs right into it. No special tools needed. Prices run from approx.$15.00 to $45.00.

How do you get the center support bearing onto the front half of the two piece rear drive shaft? I know there is a nut on the rear facing side of the front half of the rear driveshaft shaft, aft of the center support bearing, that is exposed when you separate the two halves of the rear shaft. Does this separate the front half of the rear drive shaft into two pieces? so that you can slip in/out the center support bearing?

the picture below show where the front and rear halves of the rear drive shaft meet. I am referring to the arm that is between the u-joints and the center support bearing.

Unless I'm wrong, that part of yoke (male) pulls out of bearing support and forward shaft (female).

it just pulls out? I know there is a big nut that looks like it holds them together. I didnt have that socket when I was greasing the yoke so I didnt pull it apart...

I have done this operation several times. Yes, it is slid together on splines, but it is not bolded together.
