Saw an add on craigslist for a 1985 f250 single cab. It was the ladies husbands but hes over in califonia for army. Anyways i didnt ask milage but its looks decents. New battery, tires, starter. Im pretty sure it would have the 351. Idk if fuel injected was put into these i had an 86 at one time that did. She wants 600. Is that a good price? What should i look for in an older truck like this. The last one i bought has tons of probs so i just need to know what to look for. It has a 4 speed tranny with 4wd.
what kind of things should i look for on older fords. Im familier with chevy. Idk if these have any flaws. Stuff that goes out easily i should look for. I would like to buy it and hopfully talk her down to 500.
Yeah she is flexible remember its about wheeling and dealing. The guy wanted $800 for his truck and had it sold. The roads were solid ice between his house and mine, about 90 miles of that. He said it was sold I offered $700 chained up the dodge v10 and went down and got it. Had I been closer I could have got him down more but really no reason to. $500-600 for a running vehicle of any type is a steal. Rust, tire wear, etc. all are signs of a beatup truck. Smoke upon start up that doesn't stop, oil in the coolant and vice versa. I would also listen to trans noise indicative of a worn clutch or pilot/throw out bearing.
ok cool. how can you tell if coolant is in the oil its easy to tell oil in coolant but coolant in oil is different. Now since the guy is over in califonia should i be concerned it sat for a bit. I know it might need a tune up. Im just trying to look for stuff to look over that i might miss. Thanks for all your help i appreciate it. The truck i just bought a week ago was a 94 f250 had 351 i looked over it top to bottom on way home started to idle high and it just quit on me it turned out to be one of the fuel pumps. Vac lines are breaking smoking bad out the exhaust. All this stuff was fine when i looked over it now i got screwed and thats why im asking you guys before i buy so i dont end up with 2 broken down in my yard. and 2k gone.
Its much cheaper to fix up a truck that to take on payments and full coverage insurance, guaranteed. Look for a frothy white substance around the fill hole, and pull out the dipstick to tell. The satisfaction you get from restoring a truck is like nothing I've ever experienced to know almost everything there is to know about your pickup is awesome. Honestly, its hard to get screwed on a used vehicle they break down thats what vehicles do especially so if they haven't been maintained. Furthermore, if you are not capable of understanding of your potential purchase its your fault for not taking a mechanic along and paying him $50 bucks or so to run through it (a trusted mechanic).
