1. Does a 7.3 PSD have a catylatic converter.
2. If it does not, can I remove the muffler, replace it with a straight pipe without hurting the performance of the truck.
3. Will it give me a good sound.
I owned a 97 F350 with a Powerstroke in it. I'm not sure as far as from the factory, but when I bought it used, it did not have a cat on it. It did however have a muffler that I removed. I thought it sounded great. I say go for it. Your biggest restriction is the turbo anyway, not the rest of the exhaust system.
There is a youtube video sound clip of a 7.3 before and after deleting the muffler that is pretty accurate as to the sound (thankfully) as I had the muffler shop replace my muffler with a piece of straight pipe a few days ago hoping it would be no louder than the youtube clip ... I like it ... it has a deeper, throatier sound during acceleration but yet still quiet when cruising at highway speeds...seems to have a little more pep too. I've read and been told that it will improve fuel mileage and lower exhaust temps at the turbo...hope it's true.
The shop welded a piece of 4 inch pipe in it's place for $35 and I saved the muffler just in case. I have read that there is some "quality" flex pipe available for do it yourself replacement by removing the muffler/pipe where it is clamped to the header pipe and tail pipe but locating it and/or paying for shipping would have ate up any savings over just paying the shop in my case. This is my first diesel (2002 F250 SuperCab 4x4) and I like it. It's kinda weird (from gas burners) having a larger straight exhaust and it not being obnoxiously loud.
I've noticed your other threads and it seems as though we've been on similar paths as far as maintenance goes...I've went thru this one from front to rear changing all the fluids, etc. ... so far, so good!
Anyway, I say delete the muffler (but save it!) ... I think you'll like it...Let us know ...
Thanks for the info. I was thinking about doing the work myself and saving the muffler is a great idea just in case I decide to back to the original setup. Also looking forward to an increase in gas mileage with the prices we are now climbing to.
Amen on those fuel prices...just doesn't make sense, especially for diesel fuel....arrggghhh, well anyway ... say, can I take by your handle that you have a Harley? I've got a '97 Road King ...
