JUST THINKING THE OTHER DAY ABOUT MANT.. ON OUR TRUCKS AND THOUGHT ABOUT DOING A OVERHEAD LIKE THEY DO ON BIG TRUCKS BUT CANT THINK OF ANY THING TO ADJUST THE WEAR OUT OF OUR ROCKERS DUE TO THE WAY THEY MOUNT TO THE HEAD. MAYBE REPLACE THE BALLBEARING OR TAKE THE ROCKER PEDESTAL OFF AND HAVE THEN MILLED DOWN A FEW THOUSANDS TO TAKE UP THE WEAR. I KNOW WHEN I HAD THEN DONE ON MY BIG TRUCK IT ALWAYS RAN LIKE A NEW ENGINE. JUST A THOUGHT MAYBE SOME ONE ELSE HAS SOMTHING SO LETS HEAR ABOUT IT......
Those motors need the overhead adjusted because they have solid cam lifters, so there has to be the gap on the rocker. Our engines use hydraulic lifters, which automatically take any play out, hence the reason they don't use adjustable rockers.
The only thing you could do really would be pull the valve covers and make sure the rocker arm bolts are torqued down to 20 ftlbs, and the injector hold down bolts to 120 inch lbs.
There are alot of other maintenance things you can do to the whole truck, not just the motor. Everything from lubing the brake slide pins, greasing the front hubs, checking for boost/exh leaks to air filters, all fluid changes, taking some slack up in the steering gear box, coolant testing/flushing.
