battery light stays on

I have an 82 f150 that I just finished putting a 351w in. The battery light stays on but the alternator is charging. I did away with ford ignition module because I put in a hei conversion distributer. I have a feeling this is why its on but I don't know how to get the light to go off!

How do you know it's charging? Have you measured the voltage at the battery with the truck running? If so, what is it? Most of these trucks have a gauge package. Do you have gauges?

I haven't had a volt meter hooked to it but I toke the truck on a test drive even with the light on and the lights stayed bright and it still cranks right over so that makes me think it is charging. I was wondering if maybe the ignition box has anything to do with the initial starting of the charging system... a good wiring diagram would help a bunch

Ignition has nothing to do with charging. Is this truck all original besides the engine? Do you have factory gauges. And you need to get a voltmeter and check the battery with the engine running.

There has been a lot changed on this truck. Iv had this same problem before and it turned up being the regulator was bad. I have a meter but its at a friends house. I'm gonna get it tonight and do some more checking. I'm about ready to put a gm one wire alternator on it.

Since this has a light in the dash, I am assuming you do not have a gauge package from the factory? Ford wired the alternator two different ways, depending on if you have a cluster with gauges or not. It's very unusual for A f150 not to have gauges though, so I am trying to make sure what you have. Or maybe you don't know what you have if this truck is a hybrid, with the wrong cluster or the wrong wiring harness? That's why I am trying to get more info.

Could there be a broken wire between the alternator and the regulator that would let it charge but keep the light on?
