New Guy

New to the forum. I have a situation where we have had a 95 EB Bronco in the family for since 98. It was a road warrior for the kids when learning to drive and held up well. It looks great on the outside but the engine has almost 200K on it and the interior shows the ware. Any way we parked it for a few months and the mice got under the hood and ate the coil packs wiring and what looks like some small colored vacuum lines on the drivers side of the engine. Knowing that Ford would charge an arm and a leg for this stuff I found a 96 being offered for $400.00 complete with wiring. The engine is the same 5.8 like I have. Would this be a plug and play swap? I read the "meuker" thread and got a little confused about the statement "you can not go backwards" in the wiring and did not know if it applied to the 95.

The concern with making the swap from a 96 model is that not all 95's and NONE of the earlier models use the same engine management system as the 96 models. Making the swap can be done... but the cost is ridiculous when you consider that you would need to swap computers and a sizable chunk of the electronics and wiring harness to make it work.

In your situation, you could use the engine as it is but use ALL of the electronics that are already in the 95. The mechanical operation of the two model year engines is identical. The electronics/management system is significantly different. Different enough that you need to either use the 96 OR the 95-down.

(Someone is bound to suggest that you may have a "California" 95 which would have the same engine management system. If so, you could disregard my entire post and make the swap.)

What he means: Your truck could be an OBDI equipped vehicle, whereas the 96 will for sure be an OBDII. If yours isn't an OBDII, the harnesses won't be compatible, and you'll be looking at a bigger project here.

if you want to use just the 96 motor and not the wiring harness to swap into your 95 you shouldnt have any trouble. what i would suggest is using your 95 distributor in the 96 motor. Also plan on moving over your accessory brackets from your 95 motor to the 96 motor if they are different. your 95 wiring harness should hook up to the 96 motor just fine honestly. if there is something not matching up just move it over from your 95 motor. the swap may take you a weekend in all with a helper and a cherry picker.

i would recommend you replace the oil pump with a standard volume pump and replace the water pump and Tstat on the 96 motor before dropping it in. good insurance and much easier when motor is out.

good luck. get a haynes manual also and come back here with any questions you might have. we can get you thru this.
