how much can you tow with juts the regular bumper? my friend's dad has this boat, i think its just alumanim (not a fancy bass boat or anything) and i'm thinking about pulling that around this summer because he'll probably let me. i just don't want to REALLY screw up my bumper. so tell me if u have any ideas? thanks
Most step bumpers are rated a class 1 hitch. I have a factory Ford tube bumper and have towed a pop up and used a tow bar. I think the max tongue wt. is 250-500 or something like that. If it's a rowboat with an outboard you should be good. I am gonna shoot the bucks and do the class three hitch in the spring. They are worth the money. Plus if you have a 4x4 with any kind of lift the angle of the trailer can kinda look scary.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Dec-02 AT 10:52 PM (EST)]Probably you can get a "reese" style hitch(bolts to the frame) at any parts store for around a hundred bucks or less and they're an easy install. With it you can run a number of different hitches and ball sizes.Keep your eyes peeled for a junked or wrecked truck like yours, you might get a second hand one for half the price!!!
the weight you can tow with your factory bumber should be stamped right on the bumber near the ball
i tow my 17 foot fiberglass ski boat around with no problems and it weighs about 2500 pounds
anything bigger and i would go to the class 3 hitch mounted to the frame
i have seen guys towing car haulers on there factory bumber but thats a little to spooky for my liking
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-Dec-02 AT 01:12 PM (EST)]The step bumper on my '87 is rated to tow 5,000 lbs., with a 500 lbs. max tongue weight. You should be ok towing the boat off of the bumper. If the boat trailer doesn't have trailer brakes, it's probably not very heavy at all. One guy at the local race track tows his car (3500 - 4000 lbs.) to the track off the bumper every race. Hope this info helps.
