The oil pressre on my truck (which is a 1993, F150,4x4, with a 5.8/351W) started dropping. You can hear a whine which I assume is the oil pump going. My question is can you get the oil pan off with out pulling the motor. I, tried and could not get enough clearnce, any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.:-(
Do you have a factory oil pressure gauge or a real aftermarket gauge?
The factory gauges arent a real gauge...they just look like one and arent accurate. Check the pressure with a good gauge before you tear into the engine.
The pump can be changed with the engine in place but it's a pain to do. You have to unbolt the motor mounts, trans mounts and maybe the upper intake plenum to jack the engine high enough to drop the pan. You still wont be able to get the pan out unless you remove the exhaust but you can usually change the pump and replace the pan gasket without pulling the pan completely out. Not a real good way to do it but it can be done.
Thanks, I found some information in the Haynes Manual. I'm almost sure the pump is bad because of the whining sound coming from the oil pan. The truck has 120,000 miles on it, so I need to decide about an oil pump change or a complete overhaul.
