newbie locker question...
The rear locker will let you know it is back there from time to time.
Tight turns in a parking lot or turning sharp around a corner under power will give a little tire chirp action, but nothing harmful.
They will sometimes give you a bit of understeer in a corner.
A similar discussion about using a full time locker (or spool) in the front end is going on here:

My personal opinion is that if you want to be able to turn on the trail, you don't want a Detroit in the front end.
The Detroit was updated a few years ago and doesn't engage/ disengage as violent as they use to be known for.
Basically the way a Detroit works is simple. Going in a straight line, the 2 side locking gears are locked together with the case.
When one wheel starts to turn at a different rate then the other, it uses spring pressure to release the locking gears and allow the outside wheel to turn faster than the inside wheel.

You can feel a thunk(also described as a "bang" by some I know) from the back when turning. Just drive normal and you might start to like it. To get the most mellow ride with Detroits don't punch it and turn. When I do this it will chirp or squeal and usually fishtail on wet streets because the axles stay locked under high torque, but they will unlock easiest when coasting through turns. If you tow heavy don't get Detroits, it's bad for axles and supposedly will break them (I can picture why).
What I like best about them is their reputation for strength. Everyone generally agrees (everyone I know) that they are the strongest locker out there, including those drag racing/high performance spools, which are usually engineered for weight savings.
