is it a possibility to put a spool in the front end of a 4x4 and if so whould it be too hard to drive or would it just act like a front wheel drive car pretty much? never seen anyone do it before and was just wondering how it would work.
If its yer daily driver dont do it, alot of peeps throw in mini spools in the front bu 99% of them are trailer queens. I run a spool in the rear w/ a detroit in the front, detroit is a better choice fer the front.
ok but the thinking here with putting a spool in the front is the spool is only active when you are in 4 wheel drive so you have that added traction when you wanted. is this a possibility and would it work????? thanks for the last reply but it didnt really solve my question WHATS a trailer queen???
With a spool in the front it is a little hard to turn while in 4 wheel drive because both tires are turning at the same speed. It is not impossible to handle but it makes your turning radius very wide.
A trailer queen is a truck that gets hauled to where it is going, instead of driving it there.

True, you can also unlock one side for better turning radius. A detroit locks up 100% also but gives just a little for betterr turning.
Trailer queen = not yer daily driver and/or not street legal (by the way spools are illegal for street use, but you dont have to tellm )
You can save money over a locker with a spool in the front provided you have manual hubs and use them. Just don't forget the spool will make it offroad only when your in 4wd. And if your hubs are locked it'll still push when you try to turn it regardless if your in 2 or 4 wheel drive, so don't forget to unlock the hubs.
I like Tellico's definition of trailer queen, short and simple. Even if it's not street legal it's still not a trailer queen if you drive it. Trailer queens also have alot in common with hurricanes, they both blow through trailer parks, and leave them wrecked
If you like to be able to turn on the trail, don't put a spool in the front. Spool the rear and save your money for a selectable locker in the front end, such as the ARB, OX and now the Electrac. Take it from someone thats been there, done that, and got the T-shirt; even a tight limited slip like a power lock is a PITA to turn. I ended up going with the Ox in the front of my Bronco. Full spool traction when its needed and open differential when I don't. Forget locking and unlocking the hubs to turn. On the average day on the trail, I'd be getting in and out at least a hundred times. And there are times where you need the front end working, but actually need to turn at the same time too.
Nothing recent. And I don't have a scanner that works with my new computer yet, so I can't post any old stuff. I'll try to get a few driveway shots this weekend. I have it apart to do a little clean up of the underhood wiring and am installing some new front seats.
That 78 of yours sure looks like it can sling the mud.
What was that quote? "Speak softly... and carry a big block"
I have a 429 for my 77 F150 4x4. I just never have got around to building it and putting it in.
