I have an 88 4x4 ranger with the 2.9 in it and it starts up fine in the morning then i drive it a few blocks and it sputters then smells like gas and dies..it wont start for a good 15mins then starts up and runs just fine..is there any suggestions what could be wrong with this I cant seem to figure it out.
Pull the codes for a start, that should give you an idea what is up.
Otherwise the Fuel Pressure Regulator, Idle Air Controller, O2 sensor are the first things that come to mind.
FPR can lead to a crankcase full of gas oil mix, check to be sure that isn't the case.
There are threads you can find for this stuff if you search.
definitely check fuel pressure regulator...just pull the vacuum hose off and if there's gas in it than it needs to be replaced. also check that catalytic converter, under the distributer cap for moister...let us know what's up after you check all this.
