I have a 2010 F350 with "4.10 Ration Limited Slip Axle", that quote is right from my sticker. During snow storms this year I noticed that only one tire spins. I would try to get out of my driveway in 2-3 inches of snow and it would be just the one tire spinning away, give it gas and it just spins faster. Always needed 4x4 until I reached the road. What exactly does limited slip mean? When buying this truck I thought it was equivalent to a locker. Thoughts?
The Ford limited-slip doesn't work very well, it's been nicknamed a "limited grip" differential. Go back to your dealership and complain, some have had luck getting theirs rebuilt or replaced to improve performance. Another course of action is for them to change the rear differential fluid and use less friction modifier, which will improve performance.
It is very "limited" in its capabilities. The stock unit hardly has any preload to it and is just barely better than an open diff. It doesn't help that Ford puts a bunch of friction modifier in the oil from factory. You can try to replace the diff oil with a new oil that doesn't have friction modifier and add only enough FM for the chatter to go away. I did that with mine and added about 3 oz of modifier to take away the chatter. Not surprisingly though its not much if any difference. If you have a boat the stock LS unit makes a good anchor for it. Get a Truetrac diff to replace the stocker.
