The 429 in my 78 F250 met its demise today. My mechanic said the knock in my engine was my crank. My float has been leaking fuel into the engine for probably years ( I bought the truck a month ago) and burned out the bottom half of my engine. Im stuck now looking for another engine. My question is.....351C vs 302. Many friends say 302 can't be beat. Any suggestions? Any texans sitting on an engine? Post any info here. If you are in Texas and have an engine email me. Bledsoe76@sbcglobal.net please.
I think the 302 will provide the best mileage for the least amount of work, but the 351C would be the best bet if you wanna use you truck as a F250.
Why not re-build your 429? Or jump it up to 460 as you already have over 1/2 the stuff, and swaps in Fords are not that fun.
If you swap engines you need to need to either get new stands or in some cases move your stands back or forward. Plus the transmission, and all the accesories.
Damn if I don't have an engine, but I am too far to deal.
From Dalhart Texas, which is north of Amarillo you can get to the state line of Montana at least an hour faster than you can get to Brownsville Texas. From El Paso Texas You could get to Los Angeles California at least and hour faster than you could get to Orange, Texas.
So yeah I'm in Texas and have 460 I want to get rid of, but that doesn't mean I'm anywhere close to you. Our state is huge.
Wow you are way up there. Im in Hillsboro 60 miles south of Dallas. He says to rebuild the 429 would cost me about $2500. I figured a replace would be ALOT cheaper than that. I personally don't know squat about engines. Thats why im looking for advise. Is that overpriced? He says its gonna need new rings, seals, rods and lots of other (expensive) parts. Is he being lazy or squeezing my wallet? I was thinking 351C since thats what should be in it right? But I can't find one anywhere near me. Figured I would ask here.
Price a rebuilt 429 or 460 out from NAPA or some other reputable parts house. Id bet you could buy a long block for less than 2500 and it would have a warranty. You wouldnt have to worry about changing mounts and bellhousing if it's a manual trans or complete trans if its an auto. Swap over your oil pan, valve covers, intake etc and youd be good to go. Oh, and BTW..................get the carb rebuilt while youre at it!!!!!!!! dont want a repeat!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck
I would love to rebuild the 429 in it but I don't have that kind of money. The most I have is about 1500. Im looking for a donor motor but not having any luck. Therefore im looking for a replacement. 302, 351, 460. Would rather put the trucks original back in it. How would I find out what that is?
I just looked at Autozone for you.Just for giggles I looked up an '80 460 long block. $1750 with $410 core charge. Has a 3 year warranty. I think thats the way to go, unless you want something high performance. Then youd know what you have. You may get lucky and find a good junkyard motor, or you could end up pulling it 2 or 3 times to get a good one in it. If you plan on keeping the truck for a while Id get the reman.......then you will know.

Post your VIN number it will tell you what you have.Page 8 in LMC catlog will tell you how to figure it out. Or go on line at www.lmctruck.com JIM
Ok. so based on Vin my truck came with a 460. Im looking around now for a replacement. Looks like I might get an engine from Autozone if I can't find another soon.
I have a 460 that has been machined (+ .030 on the cylinders, + .010/.010 on the rods and mains, new cam bearings installed, sonic tested, etc., etc. I have a receipt.) sitting in my garage waiting for some one to come get it. All you need are some pistons, a cam, a gasket set and you are good to go. I have the rod and main bearings.
The heads would need to be machined, or use your own.
I also have all of the pulleys, brackets, power steering pump, etc., as well.
