Rear Differential Heat

I just got back from a little drive about 30 miles at 45- 55 mph. Checked the fluid in the rear end just for the fun of it. Seemed to be fine on fluid level, but I had no idea the housing get as warm as this was. You could put your hand on the cast iron central housing and the axle tubes, but they were pretty warm. Truck is a dually chassis cab with no bed yet so easy to do everything from the top. I guess that's why the cover plate is finned aluminum. Maybe all rear ends get this warm, just never owned a truck that was so easy to get to all the rear end components. It's a 4.10 LS. Also hadn't seen a inspection plug with a magnet in it. Anybody else happen to check their diff fluid right after a drive? Just curious.

They all get warm. There is a lot of pressure and friction back there...it has to generate some heat.

In my 63 years on life I never had an occasion to feel the rear end housing before after just driving. Like I said easy to see everything and I was bored, and was just goofing. Boy those rear end housings are massive. Never owned a dually before either. It's kinda neat to see how all the fuel lines and electrical items are fastened inside the frame. Way to much time waiting for a bed.....
