Leaky rear axle

Looked under my truck the other day and noticed the rear axle housing had a layer of oil on it. Looks like its coming out of where the drive shift enters the axle housing. Im guessing there could be a seal there gone bad? If so whats all involved in repairing it? Right now it doesnt get driven much since Im at school. Is there a way to check the fluid level in and make sure I'm not running it low? I'd hate to have to replace the rear end.

There is a fill plug on the driver side of the pumpkin. On the front side of the rearend its a squared plug inside. Take it out, make sure you have a good ratchet when doing this, and fill it with 80w90 oil till it runs out then put the plug back in.

Should I just keep doing this every so often and deal with the small leak?

Pinion seal.... not a job for a first timer without the right tools. Not an expensive repair at a shop. Clean it, check the level, and monitor it until you can get it fixed.

If you do decide to tackle it you will need a crush sleeve, seal, and a torque wrench in 1/2 drive at least. The torque wrench alone will exceed the shop cost.
