1999 V10

Im new to this site and a new proud ford owner. I just bought my first truck, a 1999 Ford F250 with a v10, auto. I was wondering how these V10's are, not so concerned about MPG but mechanical wise, what problems if any are there?

Hey there.

I can't answer your question but I wanted to say hi and say that I am fairly new to the site too. I too bought a 99 V10, mine is the 350 though! I am also interested in hearing what others have to say on this subject. I have only had mine for 2 weeks now, so I don't know much about it. So far so good though!

Welcome to the site!

The V-10 is a great engine. The 2 biggest things to look out for are breaking exhaust manifold bolts - get it fixed quickly if it happens so you don't warp the manifolds. Second concern is spitting out spark plugs. Be sure to follow the torque procedure very closely if you do it yourself or else just have the dealer do it. Other than that, pretty dang reliable motors from my experience and what I have read.

I sold my '99 V10 in '07 with 100K miles to pick up my 6.4L dually. Never had any problems. Just changed the oil every 5K or so. I was worried about blowing out a spark plug, but it never happened. The truck just runs, and runs, and runs.

Most of my driving was with a 14K lb 5er. Avg'd 8.1 mpg over an 8K mile trip. Solo around town was about 14mpg.

I, also, am new to the site, but have had my (new to me) '99 F350 V10 for a few years. Other than replacing the tires and a couple of COPs, it has done me proud. Mileage suffers, but what can you expect for a beast?

About 270,000 miles on my 1999 F350 V10.

Wouldn't hesitate to jump in and drive it cross country at any time.

I bought my 1999 F350 V10 4 years ago. Have 165,500 miles on it now.
NO PROBLEMS! Runs great!
Get 7 MPG around town, 14 ~ 15 on the highway.
Only minor problem is the door lock actuators. I heard it is common.

Rock solid virtually trouble free just read the manual and follow suggested maintenance schedule, you will get many years of service out of it, just be careful with spark plug torque and never attempt to change plugs on a hot or even warm engine, cold only!!!! I have see many V-10's with 250k+ miles ^so it's great engine for longevity, close to diesel standards, I like to check out a new vehicle as if it had never had it's last service ^so I would do the recomended for whatever mileage your truck has most recently past just to be safe, and catch any problems that may be creeping up on you! Good luck & Welcome to FTE and the Brotherhood!!!!

Welcome to the forum, I bought my V-10 new in 2004 and it's by far the best engine/truck I've ever had, I finally replaced the plugs and 1 COP in July '11 115,000 miles, I had heard all of the "horror" stories of blown out plugs and I am convinced after replacing them myself that the rules were not followed......cold engine, blow out spark plug hole in intake, parts cleaner (let soak), slowly work back and forth and remove sparkplug......no problems, but it takes time and the more I think about it what garage is going to take the time to do it right? TIME is money. I have never replaced my rotors, which when I owned a Chevy van was ever other year, and on my wife's trailblazer was after 3 years. YOU made a great choice in my opinion! This forum has saved me thousands of dollars in the past two years, although frustrating at times, I finally figured out how to do most of my own repairs, and with this economy TIME is definitely on my side. Best of luck and any problems just let the forum know.

My '99 SD Scab, 2wd has been the best truck I have ever had. It tows my RV trailer like it wasn't there. It keeps me above the water mist when it rains and it starts every time. I have owned it since it turned 33K miles and it now just turned 100K. I've upgraded the rear end to 430 LS gears and it was the best money I ever spent. Mine did need the exhaust manifold studs repaired but it has never spit a plug. I replaced the plugs at 75K. It has needed new ball joints, the aforementioned exhaust studs, a VSS sensor and a PCV valve. I also installed a tranny temp gauge to keep an eye on what towing was doing to my transmission. I have changed the tranny fluid every 30K due to towing. Other than that, oil changes, tires, brakes and shocks are about all this truck needed. It has never let me down and always left me impressed with its towing ability. The V10 is a great engine!

Had to check your profile.... I just traded my Red 99 F250 V10 in last month!!! But it ain't mine

Others have answered better then I, the 99 is the lowest powered of the V10's, this engine also has a minor issue with the sparkplugs (blow outs). But it's a great truck, enjoy
