Hello, I have a 1995 F super duty. It has the big gas v8 7.0 I believe. This truck starts 95% of the time and runs like a champ. But every now and again I go to start it and it just wont start. I leave it sit a while and it will start fine. It might run for months then all of a sudden when cold it will not start. Then the next day it starts. I read something in a thread once about something air being stuck but I dont remember what it was. Can you help. Thank You
I would think your engine is the 460 (7.5 liter) engine.
What do you mean it won`t start? Do you mean that when you turn the key switch to the start position the starter will not run or do you mean that the starter will crank the engine over fine but the engine will not fire?
The truck is the 460. The engine cranks very well but the truck wont start. For instance, yesterday I took the truck for inspection. It started fine, got inspected and when I came home I parked it. I went out 2 hours later to start it and it just cranked but would not start. Came back 20 minutes later and it fired right up on the first try.
It seems to do this in cold weather. I usually let the truck sit as it is a small dump and I use it maybe a few thousand miles a year. Last night I took the distributor cap off and I noticed the contacts on the cap were corroded so I brushed them off. I tried to start the truck 3 times and it started each time. But that is not surprising.
I am thinking that there may be condensation forming in the cap and shorting is taking place. What do you think.
I think I should tell you that after I picked up the truck from inspection, I made 3 other stops and the truck started each time. This was probably all in the space of an hour or two.
If the cap and rotor were badly corroded your ignition wires could also be on the way out. Sometimes the distributer seal will fail and allow crankcase fumes to get in the cap. If thats the case check that the PCV system is functioning.

Sounds like a good plan. I l bought a new cap and rotor. If or when it happens again I am going to open up the cap and see if there is any water vapor in it.
