bought an 81 f150, the guy b4 me took all the emission vac, and smog pump is disc. smokes like crazy ( under the hood, not from pipe) and i got pressure in the valve cover. but it runs like a champ when its warmed up. just wanna stop the smoke..... help, if you could email a vac. diagram would appreciate it ty.
There should be a vacum diagram on the front of your engine compartment. This will be the most relevant for your truck. Was your truck first sold in California? There are two versions of most engines for emissions. California and everyone else.
Without knowing your engine and if its a CA original truck...hard to get you the right information...
...if there is pressure in the valve covers...I'd say your rings are bad and until it warms up and expands to fill the space...you will get the blowby. How about the valve cover gaskets...I know on the 302s they were prone to leak.
would like ta start by sayin thanks to all who reply, your knowlege is apreciated. balla- diagrams right where ya said it was, lol. and i suspected the rings. its the non calif. 300 inline 6, sing. carb no ac if that helps any further. so if i hook all the vac lines and smog pump back up should that at least stop the smoke under the hood, and if i do hook it up, how do i single out what, if any, of the related parts are bad. and again to all, ty for your help. need my old girl ta run smooth so i can get some work out of her.
Glad you found the diagram...this will be your map to getting the emissions back up. The smoking issue sounds like its past the realm of emissions.
Have you done a compression check? Leak down test? These simple test will tell a lot about an engine. And it's a whole lot cheaper than throwing parts at her or trying to guess what it could be. At least it will confirm or deny the rings being the culprit.
Look at your PCV valve (it should rattle if you shake it) and your breather...I think its on the oil cap like mine... I'm not too familiar with the inline 6's but for the most part...the functionality will be the same.
