Which 429?

Ok, I need some help from you motor guys. I've got my truck striped to the frame and I'm in the process of going through the axles and brakes. After I get the nickels and dimes for a rough country suspension I'll be ready to start on the motor. I plan on replacing the I6 with a 429. I've been watching cl and other places for a 429 and there is several i've found. Question is, is one better than another? (thunderjet, superjet..etc.) I'm planning on keeping it mild, maybe a cam just for some rumble but not for anything extreme. This is going to be a show truck it's work days are over. Any advise?

You may want jump down to the engine forums, down the page and to the forum on 385 siries engines. But I think Ford only made the 429 for a couple of years and if you are going to build it your self, I think you could start with any 429 you can get. My 76 F250 4x4's engine started out as a 69 car engine, but is now built to 460

As far as I know the 429's break down like this.

CJ, SCJ, Boss, pre smog big car(68-71.5), thunderjet, police interceptor all got the high comp heads.

post smog(71.5 & up) and heavy truck engines (made until the mid 80's/early 90's still carbed) got low compression heads. Though the truck engines sometimes had 4 bolt mains like the SCJ's. And the early truck engines had a steel crank but had FT 385 specific crank snouts.

The heads that are most sought after are C8VE, C9VE, and D0VE castings. These have lots of meat for porting, good size ports and valves, and small combustion chambers.

Hope that this helps in your choices even though it is bare bones information at best.

The truck ones are LOW on power but are built to last if that means anything to you.

Right now I'm just learning. Any information helps. I talked to my local speed shop guy and he told me the same evam350. Something about the height of the motor. I'm thinking a complete motor will be much cheaper to rebuild than starting with a block. What's the difference or better pre or post smog motors? I also want to use my NP435 4 speed. Does that change any think? I know I'll have to change bell housings and motor mounts.

If you had a 351m or 400 you can use the same bellhousing
You'll have to get new motor mounts, Both of my trucks have the L and L mounts
You'll have to buy power steering brackets from L and L or fab something on your own because factory power steering brackets will not work.

You will also need a truck or van oil pan and pick up tube
