How hard is it to change differential gears myself. I'm fairly handy mechanically; I've overhauled several engines etc. but never changed a differential. Are special tools required? Seems like it might save me a bunch of money if I did it myself.
I personally don't think it is overly hard. I have done it numerous times on my Jeep, but never my SD. I am going to be doing it myself this summer. The most important thing IMO is just being slow and methodical and making sure everything is shimmed and sligned right, and then torqued to spec. Setting backlash is always the hardest thing for me, but like I said, nice and slow does the trick. I also get the gear marking grease and double check the gear positioning with that. So far, I have never had issues with any of them that I have done.
As for tools, it REALLY helps if you have a differential spreader. It can be done without one, but can be a bit of a pain in the ***. The other thing is a nice set of pullers and press if you are changing the bearings. Other than that, normal tools should do the trick.
