I can't wait to get the Chrysler garbage out & Ford drivetrain IN!
So I need a stout tranny and t case to go behind my FI 302
I've been thinking:
*T18 or [leaning towards the] NP435
*NP205
Any and all suggestions are welcome, including how I should go about attaining these and fair prices to look for. Which donor trucks are good choices? I suppose I should find a complete setup instead of piecing it all together.
Can I start with a 2wd t 18/np435 and mate it to a '205 t-case?
You could start with the 2wd tranny but you would have to modify it to work with the transmission adapter and t-case unless you used a divorced t-case. But I don't know if there is that much room under a jeep for that. Otherwise you would have to change the output shaft to make it work. Maybe some other stuff as well but I am not sure what would be involved besides replacing the output shaft. Between the T18 or NP435 i don't think that you can go wrong.
My advice-
Wait, stop, think about why you want what you say your getting/looking for.
An 80's CJ has an all gear driven TC, the Dana 300. Use that and you won't be worried about transmission adapters or driveshaft yokes.
But the 302 is a great idea, advance adapters will set you up with something to allow you to make that work. They send out they're vehicle specific catalogs for free.
You don't need the NP205 for your Jeep (It's not gonna break transfer cases even with a hopped up 302) and it's alot taller (1.96) than the NP208 (2.81). Keep that in mind.
I'd definitely rather have the 2.81 vs. 1.96 gearing. Did the NP208 or the D300 come behind a t18/np435??

I want to keep the drivetrain as short as possible, so I don't want to use any adapters if I don't have to. I'm just starting with the 302...I do have the NP231 in the Jeep now, but don't want any strength issues at this point, or to buy an [expensive] adapter to make it work. Using a D300 has always been a consideration though.
Does anyone know of any other setups starting with a 302 and a t18/np435
One other question: I'm assuming there are just different bellhousings for these t18s or np435s...... for small or big blocks, but the trannys the same otherwise. Is this correct??
I run a SM420 to a Dana 300 and also a Ford T-18 to a Dana 20 t-case. If you still have that Dana 300 keep it. Is is compact, gear driven and is just about as strong as the 205. You can change the rear output shaft in the 300 and make it just about bullet proof. Novak sells some of the shortest adaptors for most mods. Advance Adatpors I beleave still sells the big shaft kit. Here are some adaptor and mod sites.
How are you going to fit the 205 inbetween your frame rails? I was going to use a 205 in my rock crawler, but it was to long and hit the passenger side frame. The only way I could make it work was to clock it and let it hang way down. That won't work when trying to clear obsticals.
