I'm messing with my ignition system at the moment. It seems my ignition switch crapped out and the module has black goo running out of it. Anyway, I was wondering what kind of ignition systems were and are available for the 6.6. The one it has now has the rotor etc. and the module says "switches" made in bridgesport or something like that. I'm just wondering what type of ignition mine has, and if its possible to eliminate the rotor and such with a fully electric kit.

 

definitely. you have a multitude of options out there depending on how you want to go. You can replace the alternator and this goes from OEM to the sky's the limit, through to electronic points conversion kits from pertronix and crane (also accell and MSD(?) )depending on your distributor. I cant help you with identifying what you have though. some-one else will have to do that.

 

You probably have the Duraspark electronic ignition. The Duraspark is a pretty reliable ignition system.

The box marked "switches" sounds like the ignition module. I would replace it with a Motorcraft module. Can still be obtained new (pricey though). The cheap ones from most auto parts stores seem to have a fairly significant failure rate. You can also find Motorcraft modules in the wrecking yard. Yours will probably have the blue grommet (plastic part where the connectors come out of the box).

Even pricier than a new Motorcraft module however.
