I am attempting to buys shortie header for my 1993 with a 351. Do they come with a hole or something where the egr part goes in or what? Does anyone know what I am talking about? I am not doing the work myself....Thanks for any help.
Some shorties don't come with a port for the EGR (Heddman). If your having a pro install the headers they know ones which do. Gibson and Pace Setter make them and can be ordered from JC Whitney. Make sure you have the installer put good quality header gaskets in. Napa has reliable gaskets for only a few extra $. I had bad luck with the ones that came with the headers.
I ordered the "summit" brand headers for a 5.0 bronco and got the 5.8 by their mistake. Anyway, they had the threaded hole you're looking for. They we're actually made by Pacesetter and seemed to be pretty good quality for $159.99.
Ok, maybe I'm just confused here but the only port or hole in my exhaust for anything is the one for the O2 sensor and its way down in the Y-pipe where it belongs. That and the air injection tube into the catalytic converter are the only things that attach directly into the exhaust and neither are anywhere near the headers/manifolds. Of course I have the 5.0 not the 5.8 but wasn't aware of any difference in that regard between the two engines.
BTW, My brother and I installed my shortie headers and Bassani Street Thunder exhaust in an afternoon on the driveway. '92 XLT 302.

I just got my bassani shorties (96 351), and they have a tube coming off of the pass. header, pointing towards the front end. It as a threaded end that something goes into. Dont know what it is. I dont know much about the actual layout of the engine area. This the piece you are talking about?
I have had a 5.0 engine in a 1989 Bronco, and I now have a 5.8L in my current 1990 Bronco. There is a difference in how the EGR tube connects to the engine. The EGR is mounted in the same place on the intake plinum, on both engines.
The tube for the 5.0 engine is routed from under the EGR to the lower intake underneath the plinum.
The tube for the 5.8 engine is routed from under the EGR straight down to the exhaust manifold.
Hey wheelMA1 - That pipe you hed mentioned on the new headers you received should be routed up to the EGR that is mounted onto the upper intake plinum.
In do time I will be getting a set of headers for my rig, with having this pipe to consider.
And by the way, Save your self some $$$$$ and do the work yourself. With some very basic hand tools, (A couple of deep sockets, shallow sockets, a couple of extensions, and a wratchet), and a couple of hours, it is realively easy.
The hardest part would be on the passenger side where all the smog crap is.
Accually, When I had put a set of hedman headers on the 5.0 in the '89 Bronco, most of the work was done from up in the engine compartment. There was a couple of header bolts that I did have to either go thru the passenger side fender well or from under neath.
I am patiently looking for a set of headers for my rig. I just cant aford them right now. But so far the only ones that seems to fit for my aplication would be either Bassani shorties or Pacesetter, and I think maybe Hedman. I'm still checking around. Fuel cost just went up to $2.07 a gallon for 87 octane, so I had to start driving my little 3.0L Ranger XLT, which gets about 20mpg, compared to the 5.8L in Bronco of 11- 13.5mpg. And the $2.07 is the cheapest in my area within about 10 to 20 miles from home.
Hey greystreak92
I hope this concept about the additional port was explained. But by putting a set of headers on that are a direct bolt on, the O2 sensor and the air injection tube that comes from just before the cats on pipes stay right where they are. The additional port is for on the 5.8L(351w) were the pipe from under neath the EGR valve goes straight down and angles into the Headers close to the #1 piston exhaust port. The 5.0 was setup a little differently for the pipe of the EGR valve, it goes underneath the upper plinum to the lower intake manifold.
From my research the headers that I have found that will work on the 5.8 with no modifications are the flowtechs (make sure you get the right part number from the net because the catalogs at the autoparts stores don't list the shorties for some reason), bassanis, ford motorsports, jba, and pacesetters (if they fit right). The gibsons require new y pipes. There may be more, but these are the most common I have heard of. The ford motorsports fit perfect as I just installed them. Make sure you have a good 12 point 3/8 inch socket, wrench, and wratcheting wrench if possible.
Not to hijack the post, but to all of those who have installed headers before...whats the best way to do it? It seems kind of ominous in my mind. My set is going on in a few weeks, and I dont have the cash to pay someone to do it, but just from looking at the layout of that area Ive grown a bit apprehensive. Im a pretty big guy and I dont think my front fender would like me hanging out on it for a few hours.
The front fenders are stronger than you think. I've spent many hours on the fenders of my Bronco, Ranger and F150, and never had a problem. If it's any help, the last time I went to the doctor, they just put a question mark under weight.
