do any of you f100 gentlemen out there in cyber space have any instructions or details on usung buick hinges on 56 f100 for reverse tilt hood. have the hinges just need a push in the right direction thanks a million....
If you can wait until this weekend. I think I can help you. I think application/donor vehicles run 85-90 on The Park Avenue and 86-91 FWD on the Lesabre
This subject kind of intrigued me so I did a little searching for "buick hood hinge" and tilt hood and found a Ch**y side with a little info. A couple of guys used hinges from late '80s LeSabre:
Buick hinges have also been discussed before on FTE, it's a really old post, you could contact Truckfarmer and ask him about his friend:
This is interesting but why is it that every time someone wants to modify the existing hood hinges that they go to a reverse hood tilt design? There are literally thousands of cars on the road with very functional rear hinges, why not adopt one of those for the early F100? For example, the hinges pictured on that S10 look like they would work well as REAR hinges on a 53-56 F100...
Since I have redesigned my core support and radiator I guess I am a bit more partial to rear hinged hoods...I am also tired of seeing the front tilts, I guess the novelty has worn off for me.

I am with you there. I was thinking the same thing. I have even looked at the way the Mercedes hood hinges and Mitsubishi Eclipse and Pontiac G5 trunk lids work to think about trying to emulate them for the rear of my hood and let it open all the way like the hinges on those vehicles do. Short arm and long arm and the lower part of the rear of the hood would pivot forward and raise completely vertical.
I am working on a replacement rear hinge for my trucks but haven't spent much time on it in the last few months due to other priorities. What I have learned during this effort is that the original design of the OEM hinge was sound; however, over time the hinge would fail to perform due to rapid wear on the friction/high stress points. The coil "watch spring" loses tension as the hood rises...just the opposite of what is needed. With my design the gas strut increases in stability as it extends which means that the hinge will be more rigid when extended and collapse more easily as the hood is brought down to the latching point. Here is a photo of my prototype, I need to finish it and build another so that I can get the gas strut pressure dialed in. I am looking at a few other options but first things first...
There are a couple practical advantages to a front tilt design from ease of access to the engine, to safety should the hood latch fail to lock. Then there is the "different"/"wow" factor that drives customizers to install suicide or gull wing doors, tilt front clips, air suspension or remote start.
I have had several cars with front hinged hoods, from a 57 Ford station wagon to my current Pontiac Solstice and have always liked that design.
thanks tacson. any advice would be appreciatedyou are correct on the year models and i have thehinge. i know it has been done....
