Hey guys I have some major questions. I drive a 1990 F 350 7.3 IDI with a Banks sidewinder turbo. Today I went and picked up my new fifth wheel in Phoenix. On the drive back I had all kinds of problems. First and most important, I was pushin the redline on the tranny, barely going 60. Boost was at 10-12, and that was a fast as I could go. When I took it out of over drive I cooled the tranny a little, but the rpms of course were at 2800. So my main question is what wrong with my truck. Is this the top speed I can expect from my truck. It only an 8500 lbs trailer. Worde off I had to go thru a litle pass on the way home nothing major and top speed was 40. I dont know a whole lot but I dont think this sounds right.
Second major problem is I only got 6mpg on the way home. Thats dismal. Please any and all thoughts, comment would be a huge help. I love my truck but the wife says that if I cant get the mpg up and if the truch cant preform better we're gunna have to trade it in. Please help guys. Thanks in advance
Does the tranny have an aux cooler cuz it should? And you should never be towing in od. Try taking the fuel filter off and filling it full of diesel kleen. It my help loosening up the fuel system. At 24,000 ive only pulled my mileage down to between 9 and 10 depending on the weather. But the air is thinner at high altitudes and horsepower and mileage will take a noticable hit
Yes the tranny has a cooler. Heres the problems with not driving in OD. If I drive 70 the rpm's are 3300. Thats gettin close to the caution zone and its loud as hell. any thoughts
That means you have 4.10s. those are ideal gears for towing. Id keep it at around 65 max these motors are governed at 3300. Id say just back off to 65 and enjoy the ride that should help the milage some. As for the od any ratio in tha trans that is not 1to1 makes heat. the od was only intended to move the empty truck itself.

I feel sorry for ya man...If that is the best that truck will do...get rid of it...especially if it has an auto tranny. Yeah I know they say an auto will pull more, drive better, less fatigue, and all that crap...and that's just what it is...crap...they only say that for people that can't or won't learn to drive a standard...if automatics were any good for hauling they would have put them in big trucks a long time ago...like ever since automatics were invented...they are junk....
Now before anyone gets angry with me...this is just my opinion...and everyone...and I mean everyone...has the right to one...right or wrong...
Look down at my signature and check my mileage...it's true...but...and this is a big but...I never drive over 55 mph...sometimes even slower...LOL
The way it sounds, with you not being able to push small passes even with a turbo, your injector pump has got to be tired or your injectors are wore out. I could pull a 6500lb trailer over Mt Hood and the Santiam Pass with my old 86 6.9 non-turbo in 3rd gear at 45mph all the way up. If I got stuck behind a semi crawlin it, well then I couldn't get her back up to that speed. My new 7.3 with the Banks Sidewinder will pull 2 of those trailers before it starts lagging like the old 6.9NA.
Hey Guys...That's what I meant be getting rid of the truck....If it needs all that work...and I suspect it does...I suspect his wife will want to trade it in for something else.
