4.9 oil pan

Do you have to pull the trans on a 4.9 van to remove the oil pan? Raised the engine as far as it would go using the lifting ring on the front of the engine after loosening the mounts. Still not enough room. I'm changing the oil pump. Any ideas?

I'm assuming you are using an engine hoist, the boom is getting in the way, you need to get a good floor jack a piece of a 4"x4" deck post about 8 inches long and a piece of a 2x6 about 6 inches long, a come-a-long and a chain, use the cumalong and chain to hook the front axle on the jack to the rear axle of the van, put the 4x4 on top of the jack's lifting pan, then put the 2x6 on top of that and lift up on the harmonic balancer, you may even need to take off the upper intake plenum to get the engine high enough to get the pan out.

That's what I'll have to do. Book says to remove ac compressor, egr, exhaust pipe, ps & tranny cooler lines, radiator hoses, bleed ac juice etc! but nothing about upper intake. Looks close already. Thanks for the tip. Didn't know if lifting by damper was ok. Thanks!

4.9 oil pan

Hello, I have a 96 E150 with the 351 engine. I was wondering if this pan change is the norm or the exception. Also is there somethig to be done to avoid this job.. maybe spray the pan with grease or oil to avoid holes rusting through? Thanks for any suggestions!!

Mine was rusted on the pass side, kinda worried me, but when I got it off, it hadn't rusted through, at least as of then. I replaced it with an aftermarket pan from napa (got the black not the chrome) cost like 100 bucks. and the frustration to put it in.
