Hey guys,
For the past week or so I've been having problems with my 2000 F-350 starting. It has the 7.3 with 183,000 miles on the clock. Latley it has been cranking longer than normal before it starts, but started after. The past 2 days it has been cranking even longer before starting. Last night I couldn't get it to start at all. Brother thought it might be the camshaft position sensor, so we replaced that, and threw a new fuel filter in since the old one looked pretty dirty.
Once the truck is running, it has no issues. But when I go to start it even after it has warmed up, it cranks for probably 10 seconds before starting. Any ideas?
check the glow plug relay and see if its energizing...if it is it could be glow plugs. when it starts do you get a lot of smoke? usually a sign that the cylinders are not warm...check out the top sticky on cold starts in the 7.3 forum
After it is warmed up you can rule out glow plugs, JMOP. check oil level in hpop and how old is the oil, and it's level, then IPR and ICP, check for codes also.
Check for 11v (about) on a cold start on both lugs of the Glow Plug relay with a volt meter.. After a minute or so, the large lug on the drivers side will drop to zero..the other one will jump to 12v.. or battery voltage..(this testing is with the key in the one position and no start..) See my picture gallery for the GPR.. assuming you don't have a california truck...
I forgot to update this when I found the issue. It was a bad relay for the glow plugs, and an injector that was loosing pressure and had to be replaced.
