I've had no luck finding the DS II wiring harness at the JY for my truck I was thinking if I bought a DS II dizzy and used the msd 6a box would that work? I think they also offer a wiring harness for it.
no i dont have the box yet but one of my coworkers said he had one laying around that he would give me, but i have looked at doing this is it a simple easy project?? if you did have you seen any power gains??
I have never used the MSD 6A before. I could see where it would be an advantage to get the truck started, but not much else. I cruise at 3000 rpm at 70 MPH as I don’t have over drive… so at that point it is a single spark per the installation manual.
Once the mixture in the cylinders has lit off … extra sparks at the plug seem unlikely due to higher pressure in the cylinders. The higher cylinder pressures would mean it wouldn’t jump the gap.
If you are running in open loop, fixed timing mode, you will notice more power and better gas mileage when you switch to a DS2 distributor as you will get timing advance again. I think the MSD 6A box is over kill for a truck. But if it is free….
But keep in mind this is advice is from a hard core Dirt Cheap kind of junk yard dog.
haha ill keep that in mind!!! hey lemme ask sort of a stoopid question! if i were to buy the connector that goes to the DS2 coil, cut and splice it would you think that would work?? of course this would be after i swap for the DS2 distributor...
Go w/ a Mallory E.I. distributor & a Force Ignition M#RL-2.
I've had to replace the DSII due to breakage once & the MSD6a box 5 times in 5 years & I'm told this is common for the MSD products.
I just got through with the conversion on my '85 and I got a harness free from a member on here. This thread is awesome! Unfortunately, the harness was bad and some of the wires and plugs were not good so after I figured this out, I just went through the junk yard and found the plugs on the harnesses that were still in the trucks and cut the plugs off. Then I just bought some wire and made my own harness. Was pretty easy. Just thought I'd pass that option on to you. Good luck!
Been wondering how that project's been going, Ark. Got it up and running yet?
Hey man! Yeah, got a new carb and it's running good! Had a little starter kickback issue but got that ironed out with a little timing and carb adjustment. Just replaced the throttle cable and valve cover gasket and currently working on the oil pan gasket. It will be good to go after that!
