I can't remember if '87 manuals had a hydraulic clutch or not, but am thinking they do... as my '91 bronco manual had one. I had my slave cylinder go out, and had to drop the tranny. It actually wasn't a tough job.. had a buddy come help.. had a tranny jack, unbolted the transfercase/tranny.. swapped out the slave cylinder and done! I would check the hydraulic clutch reservoir right behind the master cylinder to see if it's full..
If it's not hydraulic, disregard.. i'm an idiot!

JS, you are not an idiot, it is hydraulic. However, luckily, the slave cyl is external so easy to replace if necessary.
So, yes, check the fluid resevoir and look for any fluid leaks around the slave cylinder and also on the firewall under the dash to make sure the master cyl is not leaking. While there check that the rod from the pedal to the master cyl is good.
