I put a 351W in my '78 along with a C6, the only issue I ran into was with the Power Steering Pump. It has been running great, excellent power, and gets relatively good gas mileage (15ish or so...) Good luck with the search...my .02 cents worth of input...
@77.. The engine and transmission is remanufactured from Oreilly's auto. Complete engine with covers, oil pan, heads and manifolds. Only other thing i would need to do is modify the mounts. Do you still think it's a bit too high? I am iffy about getting a engine from a junk yard. No telling what problems it has. The block on my 351 was cracked behind the timing gear. Didn't see it till I pulled the engine completely apart. And the distributor will not come out so now i can't get the cam shaft out either. Know anyone who wants parts of the engine? It's completely broke down so they can pick what they want.
You shouldn't have to modify the tower mounts, just purchase the engine mounts for the 302 or 351W. I know in mine, I used the same towers that my 351M was mounted on. Since 351W weren't offered in Dentsides, I went with the 302 Engine mounts. they fit flat against the block, as opposed to the 351M engine mounts that look like a double U, hooked together. The W dropped into the tower mounts, and lined up perfectly.
As far as pricing goes..I picked up my 351W and C6 transmission (both freshly rebuilt, less than 6 months) for $500, not to mention a '85 E150 Club Wagon XL was surrounding the engine. Drove the whole thing home (30 miles)...so anything over $500 to me is way to expensive...
Well, it's come down to where i need either a really low price on a 351M or 302 with a transmission, or sell the truck. My budget is becomeing smaller and smaller with kids and medical stuff. I would love to keep the truck and get it completely restored but if I don't find good deals, I won't be able to afford it.
There is a guy here in Alabama that has a 302 for $100. I emailed him Wed. Night, he still had it...not sure where you are...but it's a starting point... 1978 FORD 302 V8
I would get a running M-block from a junkyard for a couple hundred dollars. The difference in mileage with a 351M/400 compared to a 302 or inline 6 would take quite a while still to recoup the extra money spent on a swap. Take out your old, bad 351M out and drop in an old, good 351M/400 from a JY straight in it's place. Easy, quick, inexpensive.

Just don't get a 77 or earlier M-block
Why not a pre '77 "M" block?
to the OP, heres another 302 listed, I'm sure you would have no probs finding one near you, they are not in short suppy.
Here's a quote from Tom Monroe's book on 335 and 385 engines:
"A final note about the 351M/400 block. It was cast at one of two ford foundries, the Cleveland foundry or the Michigan Casting Center. Those cast at the Michigan Casting Center prior to March 2, 1977 experienced water-jacket cracking problems immediately above the lifter bores due to an internal coring problem. The cracks will be horizontal and approximately one inch above the top of the lifter bores. To determine if a block may have the problem, look for the casting date code. The magic date is March 1, 1977, or in code form 7C01."
