Average Mileage?

Ok guys, I need your help!

Hubby has decided to wait on replacing the fuel sending unit. So I need to find out roughly what your guy's mileage is.

I need mileage for in town driving, stop and go traffic.
I also need mileage for towing, maybe a light trailer. I will be towing a car hauler with a Pinto on it. All freeway. Yah, I said Pinto! LOL

I know mileage will very, but I just need a rough estimate for what to watch for on my tripometer.

Also, does anyone know if the fuel light works off of the same gauge, or is it a separate warning? That would help if I knew it was correct!

I would like to replace the sending unit before our trip in a month, but hubby thinks he can find one cheaper then what I have found so far. That and I just don't think he wants to tackle that job yet. He figures we can fill it up and drive it for 100 miles, then refill it and figure out the mileage and go by that. I figured I would ask you guy's! LOL

Oh, I have a 99 crew cab sd f350, dually. V10 motor.

Thanks for any help.

Kim

Bet 8 to 10 mpg also depends on speed you plan on driving. 65 should be a good speed with this calculation and also if you will be climbing hills or mountians. It could be less his plan sounds the best. Also keep a couple 5 gal gas cans in the back of the truck just incase you run out.

Thanks.

We will be going from Sacramento CA to LA Ca. We will have to go over the Grapevine. That is the biggest climb we will have to make. I figured we should be able to get from here, Sacramento to the Grapevine on a tank. Figure 55 MPH.

That is a good idea about the gas cans. I think I may put one in, for when I am driving around town. I plan on driving it back and forth to work for the next couple weeks, just so we can make sure it will be ok for the trip to LA. We have only had the truck for week now, so I figured I should at least drive it a few weeks in town, to work out any bugs we may not know about!

Just traded in my 2001 F-350 SRW with a V-10 that got 13 mpg unloaded and on my last towing trip I got about 10 mpg pulling a 1000# hot tub on a snow mobile trailer to Florida.
Also be aware that short bed and long bed trucks have different fuel tank capacities, short bed trucks have a 29 gal tank and the long bed trucks have a 38 gal tank.
The low fuel warning light is run thru the same circuit as the fuel gauge so if one is broke so is the other.
To check your fuel mileage you have to start with a full tank, then run about 200 to 250 miles, stop for a fill up and divide the miles driven by the number of gallons on the refill. This will let you know what the fuel mileage is. Then you can multiply that by 75% of tank capacity. (my long bed truck (38 gal) usually only took 33-34 gals on a refill)
And don't worry about the Pinto. I ran a wagon for about 3 years on a newspaper delivery route and it was the best set up of anyone I worked with. Plenty of room (well, 2 trips on Sundays) with most of the interior stripped out, good mileage, and parts were cheap. Best damn car that I ever had.

P.S. Check out Rock Auto.com, great prices if you have the time to wait for mail ordered parts.

Every fillup I punch in my odo and how much fuel I pumped on my windows phone into an excel spreadsheet. I have recorded this data since day1, well actually since the first fillup, I dont know how much gas was in it when I bought it.

So far 25565 miles and 1972 gallons resulting in 13.0 MPG average so far for life of truck. Note that most of my driving is highway and most unloaded. I probably average once to twice a month loaded 4000-8000#.
Record 15.5mpg high, 10mpg low. If you do more city driving and loaded driving figure less.

Truck is 2009 V10 6spd CC LB 4x4 4.10LS 245/75 contis

Hehe, ok I phrased this wrong! LOL Although I can kind of do the math from what you guy's are reporting. I was more looking for when I should start worrying about gas in the tank. Like should I start worrying driving in the city around 200 miles on the tripometer or is that too soon. On the freeway only driving, pulling a trailer, maybe worry about 300 miles on the tripometer?

I can do the math though, so no worries! !

It is good to now know the size of the tank. I wasn't sure. I have the long bed so it is probably a 38 gal.. Can you say chuching at the gas pump! LOL

Hehe, yah, I know about the Pinto! I have 14 of them currently! No they don't all run. I have 2 really good drivers and 1 ok driver. The rest are either in the process of getting motors put in them or waiting to be scrapped out for parts. Believe it or not, you can almost sell everything on a Pinto. Even the body panels! Hard to find!!

I will take a pic of my White show car on the trailer behind my truck when we get it all hooked up! I can't wait, I think it is going to look awesome!! We go to Knott's Fab Fords Forever at the beginning of April! Maybe I will see some of you there? It has trucks and all there! Huge show! I will be the one with the White Pinto of course!
