6.0 FREAKING OUT!

Good evening my new found FTE family. I recently bought a 2004 F350 6.0 4X4 Super Duty. I've owned it for about a month and a half now. I love the hell out of this truck but it's starting to freak out! First, let me tell y'all that I bought it with 144,000 miles. The first thing I did was take it to the dealership and had them change the oil and oil filter, both top and bottom fuel filters, wiper blades and had the perform a multi-point inspection. as soon as the mechanic was done with my truck I paid the service clerk the $417.00 bill and was ready to leave. The truck had to crank a good bit before it would start so i figured "ok, it's going to be purging for a while". It bogged down on me as soon as I got onto the highway and it has been bogging down on me more and more everyday! It happens when I accelerate up to around the 35-40 mph range. It feels as if a governor kicked in! If I don't let off the pedal the truck will not go any faster and it will sorta buck ever so slightly. I have to let off/accelerate a few time before it will correct itself. Now the turbo is engaging and there is NO black smoke and NO white smoke. Talk about frustrating!!! So, I purchased a scanner and it spit out 2 different codes: P0407 EGR FLOW SENSOR B CKT LOW INPUT NON-MIL & P0488 EGR TPS CNTRL CKT RNG/PERFORM NON-MIL. My questions are Does this truck have a EGR VALVE & EGR SENSOR? and Why did I get a EGR TPS code? Does this truck even have a TPS???? Any help will be very greatly appreciated!!!!

All 6.0L trucks come w/ an EGR valve. The early ones have a throttle plate and a throttle plate position sensor.

The EGR sensor is basically part of the EGR valve.

When you are interested in A LOT more info - check out our Tech Folder.

I just unplugged the EGR Valve and ran it and it's still doing the same thing. It will run right a few times but then it goes back to not wanting to go past 2400 RPM. I try flooring it and it just stays pegged at 2400 RPM. I don't know what is wrong with this thing?

Your description of the symptoms match exactly one particular truck I recall having the exact same issue. Replacing the EGR throttle plate and reprogramming the PCM/FICM/TCM to the latest calibration level fixed it. What is happening, is the throttle plate is closing uncommanded, causing the engine to starve for air. This issue is exclusive only to models equipped with an EGR throttle plate.

So if you have a code PO488 you have to get it reprogrammed from the dealer? I have the same code.

No. The easiest solution to the butterfly inside the intake elbow is simply to remove it. It does absolutely nothing anyway. I've had a P0488 ever since I installed that worthless stainless steel intake elbow that I won and had to remove the throttle body section.

I did remove the plate. I would really like to get rid of the check engine lite.

Your truck sounds alot like what my truck has been going through the past couple 3 weeks. I got on this forum and they guys helped me right out. Mine turned out the be the EBP sensor was filthily. I took it out and cleaned with brake cleaner and a q-tip and she runs like a top now. I didn't check my codes so I dont know what would have popped up but your truck "governor" feeling, finally correcting itself only to do it later was exactly what mine felt like.
