got a 06 f150 with about 100k miles on it.
noticed the other day and intermittent scraping sound coming from underneath the truck at first i thought i was dragging something, but when i put it in 4x4 the noise stops, return to 2 wheel drive sound is gone for a little while then returns. seems like when i hear that sound if i shift to 4x4 it goes away. any idea on what it might be?
Seems like i can go several days with out hearing it then it returns
most scraping sounds come from something touching the drive shaft or maybe a brake dust shield rubbing the rotor. does it do it at low speeds or high? look for loose heat shields under the truck that maybe wind is pushing it into something or any signs of rubbed metal. (just to make shure we dont jump over the easy stuff, your brakes still have life in them right?)
could be your iwe's, there can be scrapping noise or a niose like marbles in a can when the wheel ends try to engage the front axels when there is a fault in the vacuum system. the noise usually comes under low vacuum like when you have your foot into it. when you put it in four wheel drive you are ingageing the iwe,s so if they engage o.k. the noise will go away.
thanks after going thru the forum and checking on the solenoid, i guess that whats the problem is. i disconnected it and plugged the lines so far no noise, so i guess i'll head to the ford dealer tomorrow for a replacement
