I have searched and I'm tired of looking for it so I'll ask. I have a '01 F-250 4x4 with the 5.4. The axles in the front will not unlock. The 4 wheel drive will work if turned to the manual postion on the hubs. But when turned back to auto it doesnt unlock the axles. It will not go into 4 wheel drive with it in auto though. Any ideas?
Won't lock and won't unlock sounds to me like one is locked in and the other is locked out when in Auto. Best bet is to try disassembling both and making sure both are in the same position.
Just went out a jacked the truck up with them in the auto position the pass. axle was turning and the drivers side axle wasnt. Turned the hub to lock then to auto and it stopped turning. Crank truck up and turn switch to 4x4 and the drivers side still doesnt turn and the pass. side locked like it was supposed to. Turn switch back to 2x4 and the pass. side axle stops turning. Any ideas on this. Sorry for all the ?'s as I dont know to much about 4 wheel drive stuff, but you give me a Mustang and I can tear it down and put it back together.
That could be just the differential working and putting power to one tire due to drag on the other. Jack the front up, put it in 4wd with the E-brake on and see if either front tire turns by hand when locked and in auto. With the drive line held still, both should turn opposite directions. If both don't turn opposite directions then one of the hubs isn't locking.
I had vacuum leaks in my 2000 where the hubs wouldn't work in Auto nor would they unlock. If by chance they did lock in Auto, they'd never unlock. Once I disconnected the vacuum lines, I never had an issue again. Unfortunately I had to get out to lock the hubs any time I wanted 4wd (oh how lazy I've become), but at least I could engage/disengage the hubs again.
There was another thread on some site that talked about this very situation. I would first make sure that the vaccum hoses are replaced, pretty inexpensive and I recommend the steel mesh variety. Next, there is a special seal inside the hub assembly that needs to be checked otherwise, the auto-hubs won't work.
Guzzle's page is great, used it a couple times for reference when working on my old hubs.
To clarify my post (I'd edit it but it might get missed). When I disconnected the vacuum lines, I capped them off at the wheel as well as at the T. I tried replacing the lines but that didn't seem to help, so the leak was elsewhere that I didn't care to investigate. I never had issues with my vents/defrost so my hubs might've been shot as well, who knows.
