Unhappy help with identifying my needs

Hey all
I'm fixin' up an 84 E150 with a straight six 300, I love the size of the beast, and hey, built tough. Anyhow, it's got a four speed manual tranny, and it's time to go - so, I'm wondering about finding a five speed to replace the four. A co-worker of mine drives an 89 F150 with the same motor and he's got a five speed manual in it, I want to know what you all call this tranny(in code) so that I can get the right part. thanks

help with identifying my needs

Welcome to FTE Tuffluv. The transmissions you are going to be looking for are the M5OD or the ZF 5 speed, depending on what you want to use the van for. The ZF is the better of the two. You should be able to scroll through the posts and some of the other pages in this forum and find a lot of the info you need. I would do it but I am running on a dial up connection and it is acting up right now so it would take more time than I can spend. Steve83 should be able to help you as well. He has some good links to identify The different transmissions.

The M5OD would be in the bronco and f-150's. It is identified by horizontal and vertical strips on it.

The ZF has diagonal strips and is found in f-2 and F-350's. It also has a tag on the driver's side that says ZF on it. It is quit a bit bigger and has plates on the side for mounting pto's.

help with identifying my needs

Hey all
yeah the van will primarily be doing light duty work, more of a converted camper than a cargo hauler. I'm livin in the mountains, and with the 300i6 the beast can't sustain speed on the uphills in third, and the gap between second & third is HUGE. since the tranny in it (actually a three speed with OD) is hinting at some help, I've been considering the switch to 5 gears. I"m now figuring that the floor shift would have to be moved back to a point behind the driver's seat, and that the crossmembers, flywheel and driveshaft might need to be changed/altered. What do the enthusiasts say and thanks for the info
