Not IDI topic, Trailer tires.

Ok I know alot of you guys tow on here. I just bought a old tripple axle trailer (just the frame and axles). All the tires are shot on it and I need to find some used ones (2 would get me home) for it. They are 8-14.5 tires and I really don't want to drop the money on new right now. One reason is that when I get it here I plan to widen it out some and shorten it. I will need the tires on it to move it around and don't want to take the chance of messing up a new tire while working on it. Anyone know of a place to get these tires used that don't want nearly new price lol?

14.5 inch wheels and tires means mobile home axles were used. Hard to find them used compared to car or truck normal sizes.

$25 a piece is about the going rate for the mobile home tires mounted. There are 2 different types of 14.5's, LT and MH. In most states the MH's (Mobile Home) are not legal while the LT's show up on lowboys and such. The LT's are starting to be used for Mobile Home moves also, so you may luck out. I don't really think there is much difference between the two, they both should be F rated (3100lbs or so).

If Kentucky is similar to here (TN) the rules are pretty basic for homemade trailers unless you want to register them for out of state use. Then you'll need the LT's.

Good luck with the project.
P.S. etrailer.com is an excellent source for fair priced suspension parts if you need any for your rebuild.

Thanks, I will check them out. Here in Kentucky we don't need to tag trailers unless they are for commercial use. Our vehicle reg covers them. The local state police post told me that as long as we are starting in Kentucky and coming back here there is no problem with this in other states.

LOL! I don't even have it home yet Joe. I cant pull it on 6 flat tires, well I could but I think the wheels would be a little the worse for wear lol. I am just happy to finally have one of my own. I have access to 3 other ones anytime I want but having one here at the house will be nice. Besides if I mess up the flooring or a side rail it will not strees a friendship our my job.

A buddy of mine (one of the guys I barrow a trailer from lol) had this laying down orver the hill at his place. Now that scrap is back up some he thought about junking it. After he got it up by the garage he looked it over and found it was still in good shape. He gave me a call and after a good going over we came to a price. He figured it was worth about $100-!50 in scrap whieght so I gave him that for it. Two of the axles have electric brakes on them and it is about 25' long. I figure I can spread it out a little to handle full size trucks and shorten it up some as well. I know I will have to fix/replace some stuff on it but in the end it will cost me less than a finished trialer the width and length I want.

From my experiance, mobile home tires are short lived. It seems that they make them to last long enough to get the home to where it is going, and that is it. I made a trailer years ago out of mobile home axels, and the tires didn't last. Went to tires that had low boy molded in the sidewall, and they last a lot longer. Also went up in size to 9.00 X 14.5.
