i was wondering if anyone knew where i could get a performance throttle body? i have a 96 f150 eddie bouer edition i6 2wd. im going to buy a welding machine and i ll be hauling around 3000 pounds on a trailer pretty regularly and i want to ensure my engine lasts as long as possible. im going to get a better exhaust, k and n air filter, air shocks, throttle body spacer, and throttle body... i just cant find any for my truck. thanks
I've seen some swap them from a 460?, I think is the correct engine, takes a bit of convincing to do it though....The factory I6 will EASILY last with that sack of flour you'll br hauling..lol
Performance? If that is what ya want, go to the 302 section....jk...
The engine in its factory state is more than tough enough for that...
i was told today by advance auto parts to not even worry about getting a performance throttle body... they told me to get a computer chip, but i ve heard bad things about those.. any feed back would be very much appreciated
Unless your truck is a MAF, the chip is useless...Speed Density tuning is like talking to a brick wall.....The strategies that are preprogrammed are there to stay......
Now the throttle body will definantly help, because you are obviously moving more air, but again, a bigger amount of air will require a bigger amount of fuel to run correctly.....And being a EFI setup, that will require different load strategies for the computer.....
Now if you were to get Moats, twEECer, or quarterhorse type programmer, and piggy back that into the J9 port of the PCM.....That'll work fine then....But it'll cost some $$$......
No reason for all that money to be spent on programming. The inline 6 will tow that amount like you take a dump. Just something you do and HOPEFULLY dont struggle lol. Look, are you looking to tow it and care less about mileage? are you just looking for more performance to tow 3k easier?
Look, if so than easiest thing especially if its efi, change timing on your distributor by moving it a few degrees. You can also get a set of electric fans and take the clutch and fan off front which will free up 10 to 20tq and 15hp or so. but make sure to get a good relay and what not cause electric fans are funny if not set up right and will burn it out if you dont know what you are doing.
Also, look into getting a new air intake all together. Why replace throttle body? Just causes issues in long run with the computer and how **** fits. They have many air intakes. check around on some websites. If you do plan on "chipping" still, i recommend doing the Jet performance. they sell it yes! but i have not used it. Got good reviews but honestly cant say from personal experience.
BIGGEST THING!!! get a set of long tube headers from clifford performance. cost you $390 i think and get them put on with a basic muffler(no cat) all way out back with a tip should run you $500, you can gain up to 30tq if its done right and 30hp or so since it can breathe better and if you get the air intake you are bringing more air in and allowing more out faster.. all around basic fundamentals and will compliment each other.
Let me know if you have any other questions and i will try to answer them.
As soon as my cash flow gets stable again, I am gonna replace the lower section of my exhaust manifolds with larger pipe....Same thing as the headers from Cliffords I suppose.....

I honestly wouldn't get either, if you already have MAF then a chip won't do you any good untill you have alot more aftermarket parts on it, as in beyond cam and header. and unless you spin the engine over 5000rpm on a regular basis, all the throttle body is going to do is sharpen the throttle response. I would put the money towards making sure its in tip top condition and then exhaust, air filter, ignition and whatnot first
I agree, b4 you do any mods make sure your motor is in pristine condition, correctly working, no leaks, proper motor function should b main priority than work on mods. I made that mistake and ended up blowing my brand new head i had modded a little bit. poof $300 not including my personal labor.
dont really care about mpg... i just want to ensure it will last as long as possible. i wont ever tow anything more than 4000lbs.. about 3000lbs regularly. after the valuable feedback i wont even think about going with anything involving the computer. exhaust sounds like a great idea though. i just got a throttle body spacer. i was told that should help a little bit. i do hear a lot of 6's running pipes but they all sound like a hyped up bumble bee... i hate that it sounds like an import or something. so clifford headers? what exact pipes would you suggest? also i have an eddie bouer edition. only three leaf springs on each side. but i did just put on some monroe shocks with coil overs today. truck looks more level now. anything else? and thanks for all the replies. it appears ford fans really stick together

Clifford headers deffinatly in my experience. Also with the pipe size, i would do 2.5 from headers to cat if you need one or just to a muffler to dampen sound if need, than 2.5" out and into a 3" tip or 3.5" tip sounds descent and opens it up alot. I prefer out infront of rear tire.. little louder but sounds better and has more breathing.
Also dont pass up a new carb! you might be getting more back pressure out and creating a more stable curve but remember to push more air in to give it that extra push. The new carb with the exhaust system (under $1000) will compliment each other and will increase performance alot as well as mileage if you are not a lead foot. lol
